Tips & Articles
If you are moving for the first time, you might feel a little nervous or even overwhelmed by the prospect of packing. This is especially the case if moving a long distance away. The good news is we have five key tips to help you prepare for that first move. These are sure to make it as smooth as possible. In fact, you will be a pro at moving sooner than you think!
Separate By Room
Instead of just putting anything that could fit into a box, here’s an organizational plan: try packing your boxes and bins according to the room. For instance, if you have a living room bookshelf, pack books in one labelled “Living Room.” Things like pots, pans, glasses, cutlery, and dishes would go in your “Kitchen” boxes. This makes it easier for anyone bringing in the boxes, including you, to know where they belong.
Speaking of labels, the next of our first time moving tips is to make sure you label absolutely everything. List the room for the box, as well as any specific details about what is in it, including if the items are fragile. You should also consider labelling everything on the side, because you will not be able to see what is on top of stacked boxes.
Ask For Assistance
No one can move on their own if they want the process to run smoothly. Everyone needs help, even if they have moved before! Be sure to ask for assistance when you need it, whether it’s just helping move boxes to and from the moving vehicle, or hiring an outside company. You can even ask friends or family who have moved before for help packing or unpacking.
Starting early when you move means two things: one, you should start preparing for your moving day early and two, you should wake up early on your moving day. Starting the whole process early helps you spread out everything you have to do, which makes the whole moving process seem more manageable. Since you are a first-time mover, we would suggest setting aside roughly eight weeks for packing and other preparation. Do not leave it until the last minute, because this can lead to stress and forgetting things!
Waking up early and getting a head start on moving day means beating traffic and finishing earlier in the day! It also gives you a buffer in case of delays or other bumps in the road.
Everyone has luggage, whether it’s duffle bags or wheeled suitcases. Put your luggage to good use during the move! We recommend packing the things you will need immediately in luggage. This makes it easy to access them. Include things like scissors to open the boxes. When hiring a moving company, we suggest keeping luggage with you, rather than having it in the truck with the movers.
